ABB and Tallarna Expand Their Strategic Partnership to Deliver BESS-as-a-Service
LONDON, England and NEW YORK, USA – 22nd May 2025
- ABB and Tallarna are expanding their strategic partnership to launch and scale ABB’s Battery Energy Storage Systems as-a-Service (BESS-as-a-Service) offering.
- This initiative enables customers to access the benefits of BESS without upfront capital investment, while achieving a positive return on investment from day one.
- ABB’s BESS-as-a-Service helps customers tackle grid reliability issues and maximise renewable energy consumption.
- The initial roll-out will focus on the UK, USA, European Union, Japan, and Australia, with first projects under negotiation.
Tallarna, a climate tech and finance platform for sustainable impact, today announced the expansion of its strategic partnership with ABB, a global technology leader in electrification and automation, to support ABB’s BESS-as-a-Service offering. In exchange for a service fee, this managed offering gives commercial and industrial customers the availability, performance, and financial benefits of BESS without the risks, responsibilities, or upfront capital investment.
Tallarna’s role in ABB’s BESS-as-a-Service includes providing performance guarantees and de-risking the financial outcomes of BESS projects. This leverages Tallarna’s data analytics software, insurance solutions, and financing expertise.
BESS works by storing and discharging energy from onsite renewables and the grid during off-peak times, generating new revenue streams. Projects are structured to enhance customers’ core business models. For example, by enabling logistics hubs to address power security issues and mitigate downtime and helping car dealerships deliver fast EV charging despite a lack of grid capacity.
With the rising importance of business resiliency and the need to maximise renewable energy consumption, BESS adoption is expected to grow sixfold by 2030. ABB’s BESS-as-a-Service is ready to support this demand. This managed solution unlocks the full potential of energy storage for customers for the contract term.
An outcomes-driven offering, BESS-as-a-Service represents the natural evolution of standard transactional sales. Customers receive a pre-agreed set of benefits over ten to twenty years, with their financial gains from BESS greater than their service fee. This is determined through the feasibility assessment conducted by ABB’s advisory team. Tallarna provides transaction support.
ABB’s BESS-as-a-Service combines the expertise of several leading organisations to go further than existing market solutions. ABB and Tallarna are collaborating with GridBeyond, a global smart energy company, to optimise BESS performance in real time and deliver grid services. Uniting all stakeholders is Tallarna’s creation of a business case at both a strategy and individual project level. This outlines the rationale for action.
“We’re excited to be launching our BESS-as-a-Service offering in collaboration with Tallarna, a significant and long-standing member of our partner ecosystem,” said Lee Todd, Head of Energy & Carbon within ABB’s Electrification Service division. “As regulatory and financial pressures rise and decarbonisation demands grow, businesses need profitable energy storage solutions to outrun those challenges and optimise their operations. By leveraging Tallarna’s software, insurance solutions, and financing expertise, we can deliver a standardised, scalable solution that leaves customers financially better off from day one.”
The expansion of the companies’ partnership to deliver ABB’s BESS-as-a-Service marks a significant milestone in Tallarna’s growth. It showcases the company’s ability to support major technology providers in offering ‘as-a-Service’ solutions that lower customers’ barriers to adoption. The initial rollout will focus on five markets ahead of a wider global expansion.
“BESS-as-a-Service represents a new frontier in the energy transition, transforming action from a financial burden into a financial advantage for commercial and industrial customers,” commented Tim Meanock, CEO of Tallarna. “We are delighted to be collaborating with our pre-existing investor, ABB, and with GridBeyond on this new offering. Together, we are creating a profitable, sustainable, and resilient future for all.”
